My love for Mo Dao Zu Shi

So, I went to Orchard today. Yes, you heard me right—ORCHARD. From where I live, Pioneer, it’s almost a one-hour MRT ride. And let me tell you, my butt and waist were NOT built for this journey. Honestly, I should’ve just stuck to my brilliant plan from yesterday: stay home all weekend. But nope, every time I say, “I’m not going out,” I end up going out anyway, only to come back regretting my life choices. Classic me.

The ride was excruciatingly long, but even worse than the distance was the vibe check on the MRT. Imagine being stuck in a giant metal tube with a crowd of strangers, all breathing the same air. Thankfully, the national pastime in Singapore is people being glued to their phones, so no one really pays attention to you. Except... me. I’m that person who doesn’t look at my phone because staring at words on a moving vehicle gives me a headache. So, I just pop in my earphones and vibe to music. Sounds chill, right? Wrong.

Here’s the thing: when you’re not hypnotized by your phone, your natural instinct is to look around. And that’s where the chaos begins. You glance around casually, only to accidentally make eye contact with someone. *Crisis mode activated.* You quickly look away, pretending it didn’t happen, but curiosity (or just bad luck) gets the better of you, and the next time you glance around—boom! Eye contact with the same person again. BRUH. At that point, I was just praying for my station to come faster because the awkward tension was suffocating me more than the MRT crowd.

Anyway, I braved the epic journey to Orchard today because I wanted to visit the Kinokuniya bookstore at Takashimaya Shopping Centre. Priorities, right? But let me just say, that building screams money. It’s full of branded stuff that I will never, EVER, in my life, have the urge to buy. Like, why would I spend 10K SGD on a bag? For that price, the bag better cook me dinner, fold my laundry, and protect itself from being stolen. But no, people actually carry those bags and then live in constant fear of someone snatching them. Isn’t the whole point of a bag just to carry your stuff?

Then I thought about it a bit more. Maybe it’s about showing status? Like some sort of VIP-level flex? Or maybe it’s just the playground of the rich, and us mere mortals are left to admire from the sidelines. I don’t know. One thing’s for sure: I’m probably not meant to be rich. So instead of stressing over why people buy these things, I just see it as free entertainment. Watching rich-people games is low-key fun. Meanwhile, I’m out here, excited to splurge on a book. That’s my kind of luxury.

Anyone ever heard of the legendary Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation aka 魔道祖师 (Mo Dao Zu Shi)? If you haven’t, you’re seriously missing out. I’ve been completely obsessed with it since, like, 2018 or 2019? It all started when I watched the drama series The Untamed—and oh boy, was I hooked. Naturally, I had to dive into the original novel, and let me tell you, I fell even deeper in love with the story and its characters.

The two main characters, Wei Wu Xian and Lan Wang Ji, are a couple, and they’re absolute perfection. Like, I’m talking soulmate-level chemistry here. And Lan Wang Ji? Ugh, he’s literally my dream guy. He’s cool, composed, loyal to the core, and, let’s be honest, painfully attractive in every sense. If I could find someone like him in real life, it’s over for me—instant happily ever after.
