Broke but Fed
Today was the day my wallet let out a dramatic, operatic scream—because I’ve been spending like I’m the long-lost heir to a billionaire fortune. But hear me out: every expense had a totally convincing reason. I swear.
As I mentioned yesterday, my friend K and I set off to Bugis for some unagi rice. The restaurant is called Una Una, tucked away on the 5th floor of Bugis+. We both ordered the medium portion (because we’re responsible adults… sort of), and it was more than enough to satisfy an average adult with a slightly above-average appetite.
The unagi? Oh my taste buds. Soft, perfectly cooked, and the sauce? Absolutely soaked into every bite like it went to culinary therapy and came back emotionally delicious. They gave us two layers of unagi on top of the rice—yes, TWO. By the time I had polished off about 70% of the rice, I was already full and contemplating rolling home.
To make things even more dramatic, I kept refilling my cold green tea like I was preparing for a hydration competition. Naturally, the moment I finished eating, I made a beeline for the bathroom. Priorities.
During lunch, I casually mentioned the newly set-up Shonen Jump pop-up store at Kinokuniya, and K—being the partner-in-crime she is—suggested we check it out at Takashimaya, Orchard. But alas, we walked away empty-handed. Why? Because the prices were so high, even my wallet flinched just looking at them. K had just come back from Japan and confirmed what we feared: the exact same stuff is way cheaper over there. So nope, not worth the splurge here.
Then we wandered around Takashimaya until my internal craving radar beeped: BOBA TEA. I marched to Koi and grabbed a large Wildflower Honey Milk Tea for $7.40 SGD. No regrets. Pure happiness in a cup.
For dinner, we chose Ma Maison, a Japanese-Western fusion spot that felt like a warm, cozy hug in restaurant form. The lighting was dim and romantic—just how I like it. If moody lighting were a person, I’d marry it. I ordered the tonkatsu (aka pork cutlet), and let me just say: juicy, tender, and deserving of a standing ovation. We also split a strawberry tart that was baked to perfection, with generous helpings of strawberries on top like it was made by someone who truly understands fruit-to-pastry ratios.
But the true star of today—the Oscar winner, the headliner—was the Snoopy plush my friend brought back from Japan. The second I laid eyes on him, it was love at first squish. He’s so absurdly cute that I’m currently staring at him on my bed like, “How is this legal?” Honestly, I might just keel over from his cuteness. Please send help. Or snacks.
