Turtles, Time, and Knee Pain

Did I ever mention that I’m a turtle or tortoise enthusiast? I think I have. Do I know why I like them? Absolutely not. But for some reason, I find them fascinating. They seem so independent and effortlessly cool—basically, the James Bond of the reptile world. Most of them live life as solo travelers, wandering around like tiny backpackers, and they always have this inquisitive look, like they’re questioning the meaning of existence. And their eyes? Adorable. The way they move—slow but steady—just like people always say. Honestly, I wish I could just swim in the ocean with them, vibing in the waves. Also, seeing a real turtle in the wild? That would be a dream come true.

Anyway, it’s Monday, but surprisingly, not a “Monday Blues” kind of day. Why? Because I was busy, and when you’re busy, time speeds up like it’s on a rollercoaster. Tomorrow is probably going to be another fast-forward day with projects, visitors from the U.S., and a whole buffet of issues waiting to be served. Walking around all day, my daily steps easily hit 10K—great for fitness, not so great for my left knee.

Long story short: I went ice skating about three years ago. First time ever. And let’s just say, I skated more with my butt and knees than my actual feet. That was the day my knees met their nemesis—the ice. Ever since then, if I walk for too long, my knees start sending me passive-aggressive pain signals. Ugh. I’m way too young to have knee problems. But hey, I can always just sit down. Or lie down. Or… never get up again? Solid plan.

On a happier note, I am so looking forward to this weekend because it’s a long weekend. Monday is a public holiday, and guess who took annual leave on Tuesday? Yep, me! That means four straight days of rest. The last time I had this much luxury was during Chinese New Year, which—wait, was almost two months ago?! Where did the time go?! I swear, I just counted down to 2025, and now we’re about to hit April. Something fishy is going on.

Speaking of holidays, my mom is about to enjoy a whole week off for Hari Raya. Must be nice to be a teacher. I actually worked as a substitute teacher a few years back, so I know a little bit about the job. If you’re just a regular teacher, without too many extra meetings, congratulations—you’ve basically unlocked one of the best jobs out there. Except for the whole “waking up at the crack of dawn” thing. But hey, I used to wake up early for work too, and teachers at least get to leave in the afternoon. That alone beats being a doctor, an engineer, or a lawyer. And the ultimate bonus? School holidays.

And yes, I know some people will say, “Teachers still work during the holidays! They have to mark papers and correct homework!” Bruh. That’s light work compared to the kind of engineering problems that haunt my soul. So, dear teachers, please appreciate what you have.
